Final Words: 2 Timothy
If you have lived for any length of time, you probably have gone through some major transitions in life. And perhaps one of the greatest transitions takes place when someone who has been a spiritual mentor to you is passing off the scene in either a gradual or abrupt way.
In some ways, we find ourselves going through this experience for the second time as a congregation. Over a decade ago we saw our founding pastor, Lynn Kent, move into a new phase of ministry that removed him from the place of weekly mentorship to us as a church. Currently, Wayne Williams is moving out of the lead pastor’s role and passing the baton to Jay Gjurgevich.
These times of transition are critical in the life of any local congregation, but they are not unknown in the annals of Church History or even the New Testament. In fact, the entire book of 2 Timothy constitutes the Apostle Paul’s “final words” to his disciple Timothy and through him to us as the church.
This winter we have just come through our study of the Book of Proverbs, where a wise sage passed on their wisdom to the next generation of Israelites under the Old Covenant. Now this spring we will study the New Testament book that repeats that same model in the context of the church. Paul’s words will provide a pattern for us in our own mentoring roles. But perhaps even more significant, they will remind us of what is of critical importance when there is a transition in leadership at the top.
In October we will finish Paul’s final communication and passing of the baton as a mentor to his understudy, Timothy, the book of 2 Timothy..
Hope to see you there!
